Who Do We Assess for Psychological Fitness?

Bus drivers (domestic and international transport).

Taxi drivers.

Drivers applying for the reinstatement of their driving licence following its withdrawal.
-
Drivers who have committed three traffic offences.
If, within the last twelve months, you commit three serious traffic offences as a motor vehicle driver, each resulting in a fine of €60 or more, the police will automatically require you to undergo:
-
A driver retraining course.
-
A professional competence examination.
-
A medical fitness assessment.
-
A psychological fitness assessment.
Failure to fulfil any of these obligations or failure to pass any of the required examinations or assessments will automatically result in the withdrawal of your driving licence. To regain your driving licence, you will then have to complete driving school training and undergo psychological testing again.
-
Applicants for a driving licence in all categories.
-
Driving school teachers – instructors.
-
Drivers over the age of 65.
-
Operators of small vessels and crew members.
Drivers over the age of 65 are required to undergo regular psychological examinations every two years if they belong to one of the following categories:
a) Drivers holding licence categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE.
b) Drivers authorised to use priority warning signals, drivers transporting dangerous goods, freight forwarding and taxi service drivers, and drivers providing postal services.
The assessment of a driver's psychological fitness is carried out through a psychological examination focusing on the basic psychological functions that affect road safety when operating motor vehicles.
We assess the ability to respond quickly and accurately to external stimuli, concentration and attention, stress tolerance, visual awareness, non-verbal logical reasoning, the tendency towards risky behaviour in traffic situations, and the ability to divide attention between two different tasks.
